Materials Science Expert

  • Pay: $85 to $185 / hour
  • Contract: Contract
  • Who can apply: Open worldwide
  • Posted Oct 31, 2026

In short

You would write hard technical problems from your own field of materials science and decide what a correct answer looks like. You would also check problems written by other experts. The work is fully remote and flexible, so it can fit alongside a current job. If you hold a Master's or PhD and have deep hands-on expertise, this role may suit you well.

What you will do

  • Create difficult technical problems in your own materials subdomain, using realistic constraints and supporting data.
  • Write the correct solution and explain step by step how to reach it.
  • Set clear rules for judging an answer, so another expert reaches the same verdict.
  • Review problems written by other contributors for technical accuracy and sound method.
  • Flag problems that are unclear or cannot be graded instead of sending them on.

What you need to apply

  • A Master's or PhD in materials science, metallurgy, ceramics, polymer science, condensed matter physics, or a closely related field.
  • Principal, staff, or fellow-level experience in industry or a national lab, or a faculty post at a leading university.
  • Deep technical knowledge in at least one materials subdomain, with hands-on work you own.
  • Ability to explain clearly why an answer is right, so another scientist can check it.
  • Publications, patents, or technical leadership are a strong plus, though not required.

Who can apply

The freelance contract is open to people worldwide, as no country restriction is stated. The role pays 85 to 185 USD per hour and has 5 openings.

My tip

We suggest you complete the screening questions carefully and prepare well for the AI interview, because it is how the client sees your expertise.
